February is coming up very soon before we can even say, “What happened in January?”
Time flies by so fast!
So in preparation for the month of love, February, we also have to think beyond Valentine’s Day as well.

As a 70ager, this is also a great time for me to look at where I am in my quest to learn more about health…heart health as February is not only Valentine’s Day month but also American Heart Month.
So heart disease and assessment to the risk of coronary heart disease is very important as I age.
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood institute, heart disease is most common in people 65 and up. So I m at that age where I have to pay attention more.
And from CDC…655,000 deaths every year in America, from cardiovascular disease! (September 8, 2020)…that’s one person every 36 seconds!!!
Really worth paying attention to!
Anyway, here are some of my heart-healthy tips:
- Have a baseline check up…give the cardiologist a visit. As a survivor of TIA(transient ischemic attack), I am very careful. So I keep a regular check up with my cardiologist.
- Monitor your blood pressure. We have a blood pressure monitoring apparatus at our home. Keep it handy.
- Check your cholesterol level regularly. Keep track of your blood work. Be pro-active. If it’s time to have another cholesterol check and you haven’t heard from your doctor, give them a call.
- Strive for a healthy diet -more on vegetables and fruits. Have those handy at home so they are within your reach easily when you’re looking for a snack.
- Fiber is very important in our diets too. Some examples are carrots, celery, tomatoes and many others.
- Omega-3 rich fish is a good thing to have at least once a week.

- Manage stress. Be active and put exercise in your to-do list. Breathe! Relax and get plenty of rest when your body needs it.
- Take up some hobbies as well. It could be cooking, dancing, singing, gardening, or playing with your furry baby…in my case, with our little chihuahua, Vic.
- I’m glad I don’t smoke. I avoid secondhand smoke too.
- I very rarely drink alcohol.
- Positive outlook goes a long way. I practice smiling even to myself 🙂

These are so many things we can do to get us going and be aware of what we need to do get those hearts of ours as healthy as we want them to be. For now, above tips are just a few.
